Volume 10 Chapter 35 (Special Edition)
Henri and Mari's Engagement Arc
Henri and Mari's engagement was the next arc after Team Ichigo's vacation. I have no idea as to why the group scan left this arc along with Vanilla's arc in volume 10.
Note: Henri-Mari and Vanilla's arcs were the last two arcs of Volume 10.
(Volumes 11 and 12 were also left unscanlated)
(Setting: St. Marie Academy Paris Campus)
Team Ichigo went to Salon de Marie. They ordered different kinds of sweets and cakes (mostly Ichigo's). They were currently eating eclairs while waiting for the other orders to be served. One of the servers gave them an ad about an upcoming Sweets Dress-making Showdown, which will be held in 3 days. They agreed to sign up for the event even though they hadn't thought about what to make yet.
Mari Tennouji, who used to work at Salon de Marie in Japan campus, was now working on the Paris campus' Salon de Marie. Her newest creation, a cake made from honey, was the most sought out sweets in Salon de Marie. Soon after, Tennouji-san's cake they had ordered earlier arrived, and they were astounded by its overall appearance. Once Ichigo took a bite from it, she thought to herself how Tennouji-san was really an expert in honey sweets. Ichigo remembered the story of Henri-sensei and Tennouji-san's first encounter and how Tennouji-san's first sweet from Henri-sensei was made from honey too.
Ichigo took more bites of the cake and pondered how Tennouji-san's creation radiated Henri-sensei's pastry skills.
It's as if Henri-sensei made this, she thought to herself.
Team Ichigo continued to discuss the cake's greatness, and Hanabusa-kun explained to Ichigo that the ingredients and the way the cake was put all together symbolize 'love and regard,' while Andou-kun told them that it was 'madly perfect.' Ichigo was lost in her thoughts as she was thinking of Tennouji-san's love for Henri-sensei but was brought back into reality after they heard a man proudly stating, "Henri-sensei, please make sure that you'll attend our wedding."
Team Ichigo turned to see whose wedding it would be.
"My company's finest dress will be Mari's wedding gown, besides Mari sees you like a real brother Henri-sensei." The man continued telling Henri that he would like Henri to see Mari in her wedding gown. Henri responded that 'he would very much look forward to seeing her in a wedding gown.' Everyone within the premise processed his words as if he couldn't wait for their wedding ceremony, obliviously hurting Mari's feelings. Ichigo, who was listening, impulsively joined the conversation by shouting, "Sensei, what do you mean by that?" making her way toward them.
She was about to tell Henri-sensei that Tennouji-san's in love with him but was pulled by Kashino, covering her mouth and apologizing for butting into their conversation. Henri appeared to be curious, while Mari was relieved that she was stopped before she could speak her mind.
The man asked, "Who are these silly kids?"
Mari responded that they were her juniors from Japan and that they made excellent sweets. He continued to ask in a patronizing manner if they were also participating in the Sweets Dress-making Showdown, and Hanabusa angrily asked back if he could even make decent sweets.
"Oh, you make them?" he replied mockingly to his question. The man pursued his original agenda once again.
"I, Errol Chardin, the owner of the renowned clothing brand, and the beautiful Mari will be marrying each other."
He stated if he could ask a favor to announce their impending wedding after the contest was over since everything was planned already. Team Ichigo was left in disbelief because of this.
NOTE: I'm unsure about the spelling or if I got the first name right since that part's blurry. Also, I'm not quite sure if it's CHARDIN or CHARDING because I'm not familiar with French names, but I googled them both, and Chardin's a French surname.
(Background about Mari's marriage to Chardin)
Mari was arranged to marry him because their hotel business wasn't doing very well. This was mentioned on the Korean site of the Yumeiro Patissiere.
"That perverted bastard kept on looking at Mari at the party," Honey-sama told Team Ichigo.
They wondered how Team Tennouji took the news about her marriage. Ichigo said that Tennouji-san was in love with Henri-sensei, though, and Honey-sama just sighed.
Meanwhile, Henri and Mari were nearly finished decorating a cake for tomorrow's lecture.
"Proposal?"
Henri asked Mari if she received one and had already accepted it. Mari replied that it was an arranged marriage, and she planned to trust her grandfather's arrangement.
"If you're confident that you can love him wholeheartedly the same way as you love making sweets, then accept his proposal," Henri told her, which made her stare at him.
Honey-sama went to Team Ichigo and informed them about Henri and Mari's conversation. Andou said that Henri-sensei was too much, especially since he knew her feelings for him, and the sweets spirits agreed with his sentiments. Hanabusa wondered what Tennouji-san was feeling after hearing that. Kashino told them that they could do nothing about it if Henri-sensei didn't feel the same. He was about to tell Ichigo not to meddle anymore, but Ichigo had already left the room to confront Henri-sensei.
Upon arriving in Henri-sensei's room, she immediately asked him what Tennouji-san meant to him.
"She's an adorable cherished student, like Ichigo and those talented students of St. Marie," he calmly replied.
Ichigo asked again him that his 'adorable cherished student' was caught up in an unwanted marriage and shouldn't he do something to stop it. Henri answered her that he was never asked such questions before and that the tea was getting cold. Ichigo retorted that he was 'too cold as a person' and thought Tennouji-san was pitiful for loving someone like him.
Henri offered her his newest creation. He told her that he had made it to 'congratulate Mari,' but Ichigo wasn't actually listening to his words as she was already stuffing her mouth with the sweets. Henri's creation made Ichigo realize how Henri-sensei sees Tennouji-san. From her personality to her queen-like image, Ichigo realized that every ingredient and every part of his creation portrayed Tennouji-san. Ichigo thought to herself that Henri-sensei perfectly understood her.
After Ichigo gathered herself, she told Henri-sensei, "Sensei makes his sweets with such deep understanding for his loved ones," which surprised Henri. Ichigo remembered that that was how she interpreted Tennouji-san's sweets after tasting them.
"Isn't this considered love already?" Ichigo asked, shocking him further. He responded that 'Ichigo read too much,' while thinking to himself that her words definitely kept on giving him a lot of pressure as he stared at the sugar-crafted ring in his hand, carefully placed on parchment. Ichigo then ultimately realized that they were both in love with each other.
Ichigo returned to the sweets princes, expressing her desire to help Tennouji-san and Henri-sensei. Andou-kun told her that although they wanted to help, Tennouji-san was in an 'arranged marriage.' Ichigo replied that she wasn't married yet, and Kashino said that if only there were a way. Cafe-kun mentioned that there was even more to worry about since there would be a fashion show, which made Ichigo think of an idea, and they discussed the plan. They all agreed that it was worth a try for those two.
The Sweets Fashion Show commenced, and each representative was called upon their turn while the host explained every detail of their dresses. It was currently entry no.5, Team Coco's turn with their dress called 'Princess of the Galaxy.' Chardin boasted that it was only fitting for his company to handle St. Marie's event and asked Henri if the show was to his liking. Henri shortly responded that he was grateful. Some of the models who were already called started to chat with one another while still maintaining their poses.
One girl asked if Chardin picked Mari of Team Tennouji as the last model to present her dress and another girl
answered that 'while Mari may get his attention, it should not be a worry since the younger girls had already met with Chardin to be in his favor.' They continued to chat about Chardin and how it was inevitable for him to notice Mari's beauty. Another girl also told the girls how Chardin's eyes hardly left Mari at the opening party, unaware that Henri-sensei was hearing their conversation. The girl added that it was also the same for her when she first met Mari, especially with her queen-like personality, which made people even more drawn to her. Henri recalled a young Mari from their first meeting.
Henri's vision was fixed on the models presenting their dresses, but he was also intently listening to the conversations surrounding him. Chardin, who was sitting beside him, was flirting with a girl. He asked her if she would continue being a patissiere even after marriage, and the girl replied that 'there's no way she would keep on wearing that tacky uniform.' Chardin promised that his company would provide her with different dresses every day. Henri could be seen wearing a serious look on his face.
During this time, Kashigo appeared behind the stage curtains to look for Henri-sensei. Kashino asked if she could see him, and Ichigo told him that Henri-sensei was sitting right in front.
Mari and Team Ichigo were still backstage, waiting for their teams' turns. "Tennouji-senpai, are you already prepared to walk?" Hanabusa asked, and she responded hesitantly. Meanwhile, Ichigo was thinking to herself that their plan should work.
Mari asked herself if 'she would do well,' uttering to the Lord for help. Hanabusa, who heard her plead, told her not to worry as it would end immediately right after she walked on the runway. Mari just stared at Henri while waiting for her turn.
Team Ichigo was the last entry from middle school, and their sweets dress was called "Dreamlike Mari." Ichigo walked forward as the details of her dress were being explained, which were clearly inspired by Mari Tennouji's creations.
The host continued to narrate Team Ichigo's introduction. The audience picked up what seemed to be a story portrayal, which earned compliments for their creativity. Still behind the curtains, Mari uttered in a whisper that 'this was different from the rehearsal,' but could not do anything as she was alone backstage.
Hanabusa entered the runway to enact their plan, portraying 'the prince.' He asked Ichigo if she wanted a 'honey pie.' Mari was shocked at the word honey pie, while Henri seemed quite invested in the act. Passing the role of the prince, Andou continued the scenario being 'the prince who colored her monotonous world, giving her the sweets dream.'
It was now Kashino's turn to be 'the prince who returned to the princess' side after she fully realized her dreams of becoming a patissiere.' The host ended the narration with, "The Sweets Kingdom, where the love between two people continues to prosper." Ichigo thought to herself to please let Tennouji-san do her part. It was now time for Mari to walk, and she told herself, "My turn."
Before she was able to come out, Ichigo informed her, "Now, just jump into Henri-sensei's arms." (NOTE: Ichigo's exact words in the illustration)
Mari replied, "Amano-san..."
"...what do you mean by this?"
Ichigo told her that it was their story.
"Henri-sensei feels the same way about you, so grab hold of each other's love." Honey-sama, along with the sweets princes, showed their support.
Mari took off the cloak covering her dress.
Team Tennouji's dress was full of white and honey glittering sweets with a veil and a bouquet of flowers made from white chocolates coated in honey, depicting a bridal theme. The host introduced her with the words, "At this moment, she's being congratulated by the whole kingdom," as Mari walked on the runway.
Due to Team Ichigo's reenactment and their words of encouragement, Mari could only think of Henri-sensei, their first meeting, the taste of the honeypie, and how they've been as patissier and apprentice through the years.
Team Ichigo peeked to see her walk, mouthing that she should do well, while Honey-sama seemed at a loss after seeing Mari's facial expression.
Mari walked forward, lost in her thoughts.
However, I do not wish for that kind hand anymore...
I'm sorry Honey, Amano-san...
...but my dream will never come true now.
Mari's eyes became filled with tears, which eventually fell as she was overwhelmed by her memories of Henri-sensei. Chardin asked loudly why she was crying and, "Maybe perhaps, I'm the prince you are waiting for," before pointing his finger at himself.
Henri whispered, "So you were waiting for me?" Chardin rose from his seat, which caught Mari's attention. "Your prince is here," Chardin yelled.
Chardin approach Mari, only to be pushed to the ground by Henri. Henri stood beside her, surprised by his own actions.
"Henri-sensei?" Mari whispered as she faced him, but Henri remained stunned while Team Ichigo joyfully watched, still peeking behind the curtains, immensely waiting for further scenes to unfold.
Henri regained his composure and said, "I'm really blessed with my students," referring to Team Ichigo's initiative to aid him and Mari's unsettled issue to progress. He pulled out a ring box from his inner breast pocket.
He took out the sugar-crafted ring that he had made earlier.
"I taught myself that love between a teacher and a student shall never happen, but after hearing what Ichigo has to say, I know I can't really fool my heart anymore," Henri told Mari as he slipped the ring on her finger.
"This ring may be made from sugar, but I'm in love with you, Mari. Marry me."
Mari, with her hands to her mouth, was touched by his proposal, throwing herself to embrace him.
"I love you, Henri-sensei."
"So do I."
Honey-sama was crying in the background, wiping her tears with a handkerchief. The room was filled with the crowd cheering for them, and Ichigo brought her hands together, grateful that things had gone well.
"Next up is the wedding cake," Kashino energetically told Ichigo, expressing his desire for Team Ichigo to participate in Henri-sensei and Tennouji-san's wedding cake.
"Yes, let's make a wonderful cake!"
Message in the last bubble: Let's pray for the precious people to keep on broadly smiling.
BONUS: An illustration that I've cut from the author's notes.
Ichigo pestering the author:
"Natsumi-chan, when will you draft my wedding with Kashino? I want to wear a pretty dress similar to Tennouji-san."
"That will be fun to draw but you two cannot get married yet!" Natsumi responded with bewilderment.
